Tariff Update on Crystal Industy
5. May 16–17, 2025
- Analysts expect US tariffs on Chinese goods to remain at 30% through late 2025, even after the 90-day truce, significantly curtailing Chinese exports to the US.
4. May 12–14, 2025
- Following escalating economic pressure and negotiations, the US and China agree to a 90-day truce.
- On May 12, US government signs an executive order lowering the tariff rate on Chinese goods to 30% and temporarily reducing the de minimis rate to 54%.
- On May 13–14, both countries announce a 115% reduction in reciprocal tariffs for 90 days, effective May 14, 2025. The US suspends all tariffs imposed since April 2, except for a 10% tariff on all Chinese imports, while the effective tariff rate on most Chinese goods (including crystals and gemstones) drops from 145% to 10%.
- The final tariff rate on Chinese goods, including crystal and semi-precious stones, is set at 30% during the truce period due to an existing 20% tariff on certain goods.
3. April 9–11, 2025
- US government signs an executive order raising the reciprocal tariff rate on China from 34% to 84%, then to 104%, and finally to 145% (including all previous tariffs) by April 11.
- China retaliates with equivalent tariffs on US goods and introduces export restrictions on certain minerals.
2. April 2, 2025
- US government announces a sweeping new tariff regime, including a universal 10% “minimum base tariff” on all imports and much higher reciprocal tariffs for major trade partners.
- For China, an additional 34% duty is imposed on top of the existing 20% tariff, bringing the total to 54% for most Chinese goods, including crystals and semi-precious stones.
- The US also ends the de minimis exemption for parcels from China, raising duties on low-value shipments.
1. February–March 2025
- The US government increases tariffs on crystal and gemstone imports (including from China) by 15%, effective March 1, 2025. This brings the total tariff on these products to 20% (10% base tariff in February, raised by another 10% in March, plus the new 15% increase).
- This move causes wholesale costs to rise 18–25% and retail prices to adjust upward in the US crystal market.
